How do we watch videos together?

Answer

On Campus:

If you are on campus, you can use the library's Viewing Room, A25. This room, located on Level A of the Library, is a joint effort between the Library and Media Technology Services (MTS). The room has a seating capacity for up to 30 people and may be reserved for the following types of viewing:

  • Video: VHS or DVD
  • Computer projection

Reservations for the Library Viewing Room must be made in advance by contacting Pam Magelaner or Debby Andreadis. MTS has modified the room so that it is a self-service room for the above-listed types of viewing. Any equipment problems in the Viewing Room will be addressed by MTS staff.

There are other group viewing spaces on campus as well. Check this website from ITS to to learn about other Campus Learning Spaces and how to reserve them.

Online:

There are some new options for watching videos as a group when you aren't able to make use of on campus spaces to gather, such as the library viewing room. These services require that each participant is logged in to a service that provides the film. Here are some instructions for group viewing of videos with Netflix and Amazon Prime from their websites.

Netflix:

Make sure everyone in your group has a Netflix account In order for this to work, everyone you send an invite to will need to have access to Netflix. If they don't have accounts, Netflix is offering a free 30-day trial for new subscribers. If they're not new subscribers, they can reactivate their account for $9 a month and cancel at any time. You can also share your Netflix account with two to four other family members, depending on which subscription you have.

Download the Google extension

After everyone has logged in to Netflix on their computers, they'll need to download the Teleparty extension. Here's how.

  1. Visit netflixparty.com in your Google Chrome browser.
  2. Click Get Teleparty for free.
  3. You'll be redirected to the Google Chrome web store page to download the extension. Click Add to Chrome.
  4. A pop-up box will open. Select Add Extension. You'll now see a grey NP icon in your browser toolbar.

NOTE: Netflix is not yet available in China, though the company continues to explore options for providing the service. It also is not available in Crimea, North Korea, or Syria due to U.S. government restrictions on American companies.  The content that is available to stream may vary by location, and will change from time to time.

Amazon:

  1. Find a movie or TV show. Click on the Watch Party icon on your screen for movies. You’ll find it in the episode list for TV shows.
