Can I show a Kanopy film to a group on campus?

I want to have a group showing of a film that is available on Kanopy. How can I tell if that is acceptable based on the license?

Answer

Some Kanopy films have Public Performance Rights, which allows you to show them to a group outside of a classroom as long as you are not charging admission. Please note that this only applies to showing the film physically on our campus. Other uses, such as live streaming it, would need further review. Films that are known to allow this use have a designation of PPR, but it is not always obvious. As an example, please see the image below of a movie from our subscription.

If there are public performance rights, you will see PPR in a box below the title. That means you can show it on campus as long as no admission is charged. If you do not see the PPR box, we would have to determine with our Kanopy representative whether the film allows groups outside of a classroom setting to view it.
